As I began to think up an idea for a blog post today, I decided to watch a Friends marathon that just so happened to be playing on my computer. However, I couldn’t help but notice a disturbing trend happening within my facebook/twitter/tumblr community. A trend that seems to plague even the most educated minds.
“May the 4th be with you” is a phrase coined by Star Wars fans for May 4th due to its convenience to one of the franchise’s most popular phrase. Today’s May 4th is doubly special, considering the recent announcements of the revival of the franchise.
As celebratory as this day might be, it is another example of a disturbing trend known as the dreaded “movie related date meme.”
Whats so disturbing about this harmless meme?
At first glance it’s a nice, funny little play on words. It may be a reference to one of your favorite movies. But then, as soon as you see it, it spreads like wildfire, and instantly becomes annoying. But why do people continue to do it?
Other notable (and annoying) movie related date memes:
- October 3rd- Mean Girls
- April 25th- Miss Congeniality
- Back to the Future (whose date is constantly changed for trolling purposes)
- November 5th- V For Vendetta.
so please, if you see someone post a meme regarding a date of a certain film, stop yourself from posting it, because chances are, we have seen it already.
